The Natural Resources Defense Council has petitioned the federal government to list the pinto abalone as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.
Harvested for centuries, the shallow-water species is perhaps too easy to catch. It’s also susceptible to water quality degradation from nearby development, as well as the effects of global warming–including warmer, more acidic water, and disruption from strong storms. Despite restrictions on recreational and commercial harvesting, the NRDC states, the abalone are harder and harder to find.
